GLORIA DEI WARMING CENTER

(Scroll to the bottom of the page for Volunteer Sign-up link)
Each Sunday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church worshipers are welcomed with the words "Wherever you are on your journey, you are welcome at Gloria Dei."  After a devastating fire which destroyed a large portion of Gloria Dei's beloved building, the congregation recommitted itself to the Duluth Hillside neighborhood.  With the strong support of community members, the fire-damaged portions of the building were restored and reconfigured to represent the congregation's commitment to serving its Hillside neighbors, embracing a vision for God's mission that gathers together people wonderfully diverse in age, race, ability, background and experience.

When CHUM offered Gloria Dei the opportunity to partner with homeless shelter staff to open its doors to provide a warm, safe space for its neighbors in the renovated Hillside Room on overly cold nights, the Gloria Dei Warming Center was born.

The Warming Center is open from 8:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. (7:00 a.m. on Sundays) when the weather is predicted to reach 10 degrees or below, and will be in operation until April 30, 2020.  Gloria Dei's renovated building has up-to-date sprinkler and fire safety systems, which allows guests to sleep overnight.  Guests will also be able to connect with needed resources during Warming Center hours.

CHUM Duluth coordinates the Warming Center and provides paid CHUM staff to operate the center overnight.  Gloria Dei coordinates the volunteers who have been asked to assist CHUM staff in the evenings and mornings to provide hospitality to guests and assist with setting up and closing.  CHUM will activate the warming center by 5:00 p.m. the day before the Warming Center is to be open.

Volunteer Information:

Volunteers enter and leave through the “Breakfast Door” on 6th Avenue East, with parking available in the Gloria Dei portion of the parking lot on East 3rd Street.  Please do not park in the Essentia portion or you could be towed.  CHUM staff will be present and awake throughout the night, so volunteers are not required to stay over.  CHUM staff have a handbook and list of specific duties which they need to follow and we (volunteers) will be there to offer assistance so that they can manage the WC efficiently.  Volunteers are asked to sign in, and then assist CHUM staff with setting up the WC, making/serving coffee and food, welcoming guests as they arrive, distributing needed items as directed by CHUM staff, and assisting with coffee/food and cleanup in the morning.  All needs are provided by CHUM, including food, coffee, cleaning supplies, and sleeping mats.  Donations are always welcome but not necessary.  Areas of the church outside the Hillside Room should not be entered unless there is an emergency.  CHUM staff are trained in conflict de-escalation, AED use, blood borne pathogens and sharps (syringes), and Narcan administration.  They have an emergency protocol to follow and have the Gloria Dei emergency contact number in the unlikely case that something should occur which requires additional assistance regarding building issues.  If you, as a volunteer, have a question or concern that does not require an emergency response, you are welcome to contact Char by email (charm64@gmail.com), phone or text (218-590-5083).  Please also note that CHUM staff have been instructed to ask all media to remain outside the building and they are not permitted to speak to members of the media.  Should media be present, CHUM staff will contact the CHUM executive director and she will respond.  This is to protect our guests’ privacy and to maintain the integrity of the organization.  No photography is permitted inside the WC when guests are present and confidentiality of the guests and their personal circumstances must be protected.
