CHUM

Gloria Dei is a founding congregation of CHUM and remains very active. At times the CHUM Emergency Shelter has been overwhelmed by more homeless families than they can effectively house. Gloria Dei has provided an emergency shelter for these extra families from time to time. Two volunteers (sometimes from outside our congregation) stay the night with two or three families in our building. This service has not always been necessary, but our volunteers remain at the ready and our members have stayed involved with some of the families that we met in this way. We also participate in the CHUM governance, advocacy, and fundraisers, we serve meals at the Drop In Center, and are very well represented at the delegate assemblies. More information can be found at www.chumduluth.org.

Good Samaritan Sunday – 1st Sunday of the Month

In his famous parable (Luke 10), Jesus lifts up the compassionate actions of a Samaritan toward a needy person for his disciples to follow. Our Service & Justice Ministry wants to highlight two ways we can follow Jesus’ command to “go and do likewise” on the first Sunday of each month.

1. Our loose cash offering (and designated offerings) on the first Sunday has for several years gone to the Gabriel Fund, a ministry started by Gloria Dei and other Central Hillside parishes and managed through CHUM, for direct assistance to the needy.

2. Canned food items can be brought to help replenish the CHUM Food Shelf, and brought forward as part of our offering.

Grandma’s Marathon & Gabriel Fund

Each year in mid-June, Gloria Dei runners compete with Trinity Lutheran runners to raise money for Central Hillside families through the Gabriel Fund. We’re “running to keep people on their feet.” To pledge members who plan to run Grandma’s Marathon, the half-marathon, or 5k, or to volunteer at the CHUM Water Station at Fitger’s (Mile 24), contact Steve Dalager. The congregation with the most pledged gifts before the marathon gets to keep the “Oasis Cup” traveling trophy.

March Minnesota Food Share

March provides an unequaled opportunity for people to stretch cash and food contributions to food shelves. Every donation receives matching incentive funds from the Minnesota Food Share March Campaign and the Feinstein Foundation. Cash donations are especially welcome. They allow the Food Shelf to take advantage of lower prices available through local vendors. The campaign begins March 1 and runs for the entire month, so March is the best time of the year to help stock the CHUM Food Shelf.

Free Tax Preparation:

Each year, Gloria Dei is one of the free tax preparation sites in Duluth. Appointments for Wednesdays from February to April 15 can be made through the church office.
